Small Business Strategies for Winning in AI Search

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the search landscape lately, you’ve probably noticed it’s getting a bit crowded. It’s not just Google anymore; we’ve got ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and all the rest, all vying for attention. For a small business, this can feel like trying to shout in a stadium.

I’ve been asked a lot lately: "Crystal, is SEO dead? Do I even bother if a robot is just going to summarize my website?" Here’s the deal: SEO isn’t dead; it’s just getting a logic upgrade. We’re moving from a world of "match the keyword" to a world of "be the expert."

In the era of LLMs (Large Language Models), the best small business strategies for AI search are about being distinct, being clear, and being an entity.

1. Move From Keywords to "Entity" Excellence

Back in the day, if you wanted to be first in the phone book, you named your business "Aardvark Taxis" just to be at the top of the 'A's. AI doesn't care about alphabetical order - it cares about identity.

To win in AI search, you need to be a distinct entity. Don’t just say you’re a "service provider." That’s filler. Be specific. > "We are a family-owned bakery specializing in gluten-free sourdough, based in East London since 2018." When you are that clear, you aren't just a collection of words; you’re a "thing" in the AI’s knowledge graph. AI tools like Perplexity look for "One Thousand Points of Contextual Knowledge" to verify who you are.

2. Schema: Your "Secret Sauce" for the Machines

I’m sometime called a "Schema Queen," and for good reason. Think of your website like a pizza. You’ve got all these ingredients—text, images, reviews—but the AI might just be looking for the "pepperoni" (your price) or the "crust" (your address).

Schema markup (structured data) is the code that tells the AI exactly what those ingredients are without it having to guess.

  • Use LocalBusiness schema to pin your location.

  • Use Product or Service schema to define your offerings.

  • Use Review schema so the AI knows people actually like you.

If you don't use schema, you're making the AI work too hard. And trust me, even robots appreciate it when you make their lives easier.

3. Be Instagrammable

AI models like Gemini and GPT-4o are multimodal—they can "see." One of my favorite small business strategies is being "Instagrammable" tactic.

When customers take photos of your unique space and upload them, it acts as a "source of truth" for the AI. It confirms to the model that:

  • Your business is a real, physical place.

  • The "vibe" or category you claim (e.g., "Cozy Artisan Bakery") matches the visual data being fed into the system by third parties.

If you have a physical shop, make it distinct. Use unique decor or a "hero" feature that is unique to your venue. When customers take photos and post them, and you have those same images on your website, the AI can connect the dots. It recognizes your brand's physical feature as part of your entity. You are giving the AI more data points to understand who you are. It’s not just about the text on your page; it’s about the visual footprint you leave across the web.

4. Answer the "Hard" Questions

AI tools are "Reasoning Models." They are looking for the best, most logical answer to a query. If you only have generic content on your site, you’re just "filler."

Take the actual, complicated questions your customers ask and answer them better than anyone else.

  • Generic: "How to fix a leaky pipe."

  • Expert (All Killer): "How to fix a copper pipe leak in an 1890s Victorian basement without a torch."

When you provide nuanced, expert content, you become the "source of truth" that the AI cites.

5. Audit Your "Digital Footprint"

Ask ChatGPT or Gemini right now: "What are the best [Your Industry] in [Your City]?" * If you aren't there, look at who is.

  • Are they on more local directories?

  • Do they have more specific schema?

  • Is their Google Business Profile more active?

AI search is an opportunity to plug the gaps in your digital footprint. If the "Hive Mind" doesn't know you exist, it’s because you haven't given it enough clear signals to follow.

The Bottom Line

Small businesses have a massive advantage in AI search because you can be faster and more niche than the big guys. You don't need a massive team; you just need to be intentional. Focus on your entity, clean up your schema, and remember: All killer, no filler.
